Program in Course Redesign

Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis

Course Title: Introduction to Sociology
Redesign Coordinator: Robert White

Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis (IUPUI) redesigned Introduction to Sociology. The goals were to encourage greater collaboration, increase student learning and decrease the percentage of students receiving a D or F or withdrawing from the course. The course redesign involved eliminating the traditional multiple section course format developed individually by instructors and substituting a common format that included online learning modules and threaded discussions, an interactive research module and interactive computer-based testing. Some sociology sections were linked to an Elementary Composition course. The redesign plan expected to produce a 20% cost-per-student reduction plus additional savings resulting from decreased D's, F's and withdrawals. The results of the completed redesign can be found by following the links listed below under Final Report.
