Sustainability

University of Colorado at Boulder

Will the redesign be sustained now that the grant period is over?

The redesigned course format is now embedded within the culture of the department. In fall 2001, the professor who taught the original course deliberately did not teach the course again in order to make room for another professor to offer the redesigned format. A young assistant professor taught the redesigned format as his first experience in undergraduate teaching. He enjoyed it very much and intends to continue teaching in that format. In fall 2002, the department will offer two large sections in the redesigned course, taught by two faculty members, neither of which is the professor who taught the original course. More such sections will be offered as soon as appropriate classroom space becomes available.

The course-redesign team is working to help other university departments implement similar redesigns. Members of the team are working with the administration to secure permanent scholarship support for ULAs both in the astronomy course and in other redesigns in introductory math and science classes. In addition, they hope to propagate the redesigned format at several other college and university campuses throughout the state.
