Sustainability

The University of Tennessee, Knoxville

Will the redesign be sustained now that the grant period is over?

The team is confident that the redesign will continue. During the 2002-2003 academic year, the university is accommodating an extra ~500 students. The faculty in the Modern Language Department are pleased with the learning gains and the ability to include more students. In addition, the department has decided that the second year Spanish course is now easier than the redesigned Spanish Transition course so they have selected a more difficult book for the second-year course. Conditions for ongoing sustainability include the number of entering GTAs each fall must be high enough to guarantee one GTA assistant for each Spanish Transition section; classrooms with seating capacities of at least 60 must be available to handle the larger section sizes; and the political climate within the foreign language department must continue to support large-size foreign language classes.
