Impact on Cost Savings

Florida Gulf Coast University

Were costs reduced as planned?

The cost of the redesigned Understanding the Visual and Performing Arts course went down as expected. The cost-per-student in the traditional course enrolling 800 students was $132. The cost-per-student of the redesign enrolling 950 students was $81, and the cost-per-student when 1200 students took the course in the second year of full implementation was $70.

The only change in the course design plan was to increase the number of students that each preceptor handled from 48 to 60. Preceptors found that they were able to work with ten small groups of six students rather than eight.

As the course enrollment grows, the only additional cost will be that of increasing the number of preceptors. The cost of the course coordinator and the faculty remain unchanged. Thus, the cost-per-student will continue to go down. The projected cost-per-student for 2400 students is $50, the projected enrollment five years from now.
