Impact on Cost Savings

The University of Southern Mississippi

Were costs reduced as planned?

The university originally estimated that the cost-per-student would decrease from $70 to $31, a 56% savings. However, enrollment in the redesigned course has been lower than anticipated (to date, a maximum of 750 per term), and the cost-per-student is thus far $41. This represents a 41% savings over the traditional model. Enrollment is expected to climb to the full 1,000 students per term over the next few years.

Savings accrued thus far have remained within the English Department. The time saved by faculty members was redirected to redesigning other general education courses, enhancing upper-level undergraduate and graduate offerings, and providing additional resources for research and service. Funds previously used to hire adjuncts were used at the college level for similar academic enhancements.
